Shana Lloyd
Founder

Shana's love and attachment to the land dates back to the time she was five years old. Born and raised in what was still rural Southern California, she spent much of her time at her neighbor's farm tending to the horses. She holds a MS in Nutrition Science from UCLA. Following her graduate studies Shana participated in the nutrition field as an educator and clinical dietitian through the 1980's.

After practicing as a dietician Shana became a full time mom and ventured into real estate, owning and operating residential and commercial properties mainly in Seattle and Santa Monica, but other locations in Washington, California, and Nevada as well.

In 1995 Shana ran away to Orcas Island and purchased the farm property. She had spent many summer vacations on the islands previously and fell in love instantly, as most people do. Now with the farm, Shana could respond to her true calling of gardening/farming as a full time lifestyle and job. She still loves to go horseback riding and spends any free time carding and spinning her prized alpaca fiber and sheep wool.

In 2008 Shana stepped back from playing pivitol rolls in Sleeping Sea, handing over her duties to Zachary and Sarah.

Thea Mayerson
Co-founder

Thea was born in 1917, but with her energy and wit you can easily mistake her for going on 21 years of age. Still very active in daily farm life, Thea takes the dogs for a walk at first sunlight before her morning coffee and news hour. Once a manager at Macy's department store, she is now in the gardens or courtyard collecting flowers or processing our fresh farm produce and eggs. When we are lucky she makes her exquisite jams, relishes, and other delectable foods. With more stories and opinions than a Sunday newspaper, come say hello to Thea for a discussion you'll never forget.

Zachary Lefton
Director

Zach was raised on Sleeping Sea Farm where he discoverd and developed his love of the land. He holds a degree in sustainable tourism from Western Washington University and is currently studying for his masters of landscape architecture (MLA) from the University of Oregon. Every moment Zach spends out of the classroom has been on the farm working, managing, designing, and developing projects. In between school and his efforts at Sleeping Sea, Zach makes every attempt for a bit of travel and adventure. A year abroad at the University of Newcastle, Australia, backpacking southern and eastern Africa, New Zealand, and many excursions along our own West Coast.

In 2008 he took a year of absence from graduate school to direct and manage the development and expasnsion of Sleeping Sea. Still, he manages to get out and is very involved in the local community with music and arts and volunteering at the local teen center.

Sarah Lefton
Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

Sarah has split her time between the city and the farm and fit almost everything in between. As a University of Washington undergrad, Sarah took a hiatus from college and attended the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in Los Angeles and went on safari in Africa. Not long after Sarah returned to the UW to complete her BA in International Studies with an emphasis on comparative religion and Middle Eastern studies. She is our equestrian consultant and manager of all animal care programs on the farm. After she masters the art of equestrian hoof trimming (whoa!), Sarah began her masters at Trintiy College Dublin, Ireland in Fall 2009 studying Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Micah Lefton
Farmhand

Micah, the youngest in the family, found his passions in the field of medicine quite early on. He is currently finishing a pre-med program at Northeastern University, with an emphasis on the brain and the nervous system. During school Micah fills what little of his spare time as an EMT in Boston and volunteer teaching of Health Ed. at inner city schools. He holds on to his aspirations of being a suergon while still giving a helping hand on the farm during the summers. You'll find Micah wrangling horses and riding our Mustang bareback in the arena. Even though he's made it clear he wants to excel in human medicine first, he's the first person we consult when any of our animals are ailing or injured. If the dachshund grabs the chicken's wing for sport or the horse sprains its leg, we yell for Micah.

The Animals

The animals are as much a part of the family as is the case on most farms. The house has a history of being animal friendly with not just dogs in the house, but horses and pigs passing through as well, so the stories go. Those wild days are over now, but we still have many animals that complete our farm.

Meet our registered Tennessee Walking Horses: Strider and Mango; and our Arabian: Dancer

Our friendly and gorgeous alpacas are all named for storybook characters; Curious George, Stuart Little, Willy Wonka, Charlie Chocolate, Dr. Suess, and Oliver Warbucks. Their fiber is absolutely precious and soft.

The sheep look sweet, but are quite the tease. Jack and Jill were the first and their three young ewes are Rachel, Noemi, and Joni. They provide just enough wool, but there are always room for more sheep, especially in the Spring when we can't mow the pastures fast enough.

What is a farm without a goat? Our two "old goats" Muriel and Riddle are both Alpine Milk goats, but both past milking age now.

Our guard llama Rapunzel also helps in the effort to provide fiber for spinning too.

The Chickens are too numerous to name, but we have to mention a few. The top birds are roosters Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingington, Lizzie, Jane, Connie, and Scarlett. The turkeys are Meridith and Christine. The top geese are Maurice and Little Miss Sunshine. Our mother duck Butterfly is quite the pet.

Last, but perhaps most important of all are our three farm dogs and three farm cats. Cecilia or "Cillie" is our black lab and lead farm dog. Ana and Cortes, named after the town Anacortes, are standard dachshunds and farm hunters. Finally the three cats are Freddy, Figgy, and Fiona. Fiona is our celebrity cat who wouldn't touch a mouse. She delegated this dirty job to our dachshunds. You can find Fiona's photo in CityDog Magzine Summer 2008. A very sophisticated cat, she is our greeter at Once In A Blue Moon Farm.

The WWOOFers

Standing for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms, WWOOF is an international movement that is helping people share sustainable ways of living. At any given time we may have one to three WWOOFers on the farm volunteering. Most of them are college students traveling during the summers and often interested in gaining knowledge about farms or rural living. They are an invaluable helping hand here on our farm with tasks from animal care to harvesting to hosting our guests.
